Richard Pryor. s It Something I Said? Only Carlin fans might argue that Richard Pryor is not the greatest stand-up comedian of all time. Any of Pryor’s albums could be considered essential to own on vinyl. 1975’. s It Something I Said? just happens to be his best. Some of the material on No Respect is homophobic, but even the 1980 audience sounds audibly uncomfortable with those jokes. Much of the material, like Dangerfield saying a girl was so ugly, and the audience responding How ugly is she? has become cliché and hacky.

Over 18 years after Richard Pryor died of a heart attack while suffering from multiple sclerosis, new secrets about the late comedian continue to pour out from the people who knew him best. Last year, Quincy Jones said in a bombshell interview that Pryor had a slept with Marlon Brando, an assertion that his wife Jennifer Lee Pryor later said was true. I sometimes think that Richard created chaos for comedy, she tells me, seated in her hotel suite in Austin, Texas, a few hours before the film’s premiere. It is unclear how many of these issues might end up in the long-gestating and much-troubled Richard Pryor biopic that Jennifer Lee has been trying to get off the ground for years as a producer. She had originally set it up with Harvey Weinstein, but took the project back after the revelations about his history of sexual assault. We’re doing a complete reset, she says, explaining that she never transferred the rights to Weinstein’s company- thank God -but has now thrown the previous script away and is developing a new version.
Richard Pryor died in 2005, but he was one of those guys that was so loved and so respected, that it still doesn’t even feel like he’s gone. It will be interesting to see how a movie about him looks. Apparently the movie will also be casting multiple female roles for the wives of Pryor, as well as the also legendary Red Foxx. As well all know, Eddie Murphy hasn’t been on a very good streak fo. ell, quite a while now. Most people can’t even stand him anymore, but I’m one of those people who still remembers old school Eddie and will always love him for those movies.
