Album · 1969 · 12 Songs. Of course they barely lasted two tempestuous years: Buffalo Springfield were born to ignite a movement and then explode. The smoke had hardly cleared when this compilation was released in 1969, and these songs are testament to both the band's lasting impact on folk rock and their brilliance as songwriters and players. To wit: Stephen Stills and Neil Young's duelling guitars on the epic bluegrass psychedelia of "Bluebird". Young's heart-shattering, multi-movement "Broken Arrow" is equally grand, and "For What It's Worth" is a forever classic
Retrospective: The Best of Buffalo Springfield may not be definitive, but it's a good, basic overview of the group's career, containing most of the group's biggest hits and signature songs. Yes, several worthy album cuts are missing, but as a sampler, this works quite well, offering a nice introduction to the group.

Buffalo Springfield are one of the archetype rock and roll bands of all time. Their time together was brief, but in just over two years they managed to issue three albums and a handful of singles, and spawn the careers of Stephen Stills, Richie Furay, Bruce Palmer, Dewey Martin, Jim Messina and Neil Young . The Springfield always had a slightly tougher sound than, say, the Byrds, and it's evident here. The song's simple, but highly effective, harmonies throughout fit like a glove. The balance between the clean, pretty guitar fills and the dirtier fuzz solo pairs up for an unbeatable combination.
