The Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto has released 19 solo studio albums, six live albums, several compilation albums, two EPs, and various singles and soundtracks. Sakamoto has also released many video albums and music videos. Several of the albums exist in both an original Japanese version and an international version (which often contains has a different tracklisting). Because this set features some of Sakamoto's most famous film scores, it doesn't delve into the ethereal and experimental nature of some of his more esoteric work. It's pretty conventional by comparison (it's actually billed as an album of pieces composed to accompany visual events), which might make it a good starting point for novices.
It is an intriguing syncretism and the ideal title for this album, a collection of pieces that Ryuichi Sakamoto composed mostly as aural accompaniment to visual events - but that exist on their own as pure music, evocative and compelling without any external program. The Last Emperor," "Little Buddha," "Wuthering Heights" and "Forbidden Colors" (Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence) are some of Sakamoto's most renowned themes, each evidence that he is one of the more memorable melodists working today
The first four are excepts from musical scores and soundtracks that Sakamoto worked on. Forbidden Colours being the theme to Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, while the others are all self-titled from the films they appeared in. This version of Forbidden Colours does feature Sylvian’s vocals, but I suspect they were dubbed in later and not performed live with the rest of the music. Replica is the only track on the album.
