Many of the pieces on pianist Pete Malinverni's Invisible Cities were inspired in part by the book of the same name by Italo Calvino, though in Malinverni's case, the cities he portrays in his composition are not figments of his imagination. Recruiting a top-flight band for the date, including tenor saxophonist Rich Perry, trumpeter/flügelhornist Tim Hagans, bassist Ugonna Okegwo, and drummer Tom Melito, Malinverni delivers a CD with a striking mix of originals and familiar songs (the latter reshaped dramatically).
Pete Malinverni: Invisible Cities by David A. Orthmann, published on May 30, 2008. Pete Malinverni's Invisible Cities:, inspired by the imaginative flights of Italo Calvino's novel of the same name, exists on its own terms and doesn't readily fit into any established jazz style or sensibility. The pianist effectively juxtaposes six of his compositions and four well-known, urban-themed songs. His ballad-oriented tunes, "New Orleans-Cities & Desire," "Salem-Hester Prynne," and "A City Called Heaven," are clothed in lovely, expressive melodies, the kind that beg for equally inspired lyrics.

Pete Malinverni : Invisible Cities. Published August 1, 2008April 25, 2019 – By Owen Cordle. This album isn’t travel poster art. No self-respecting jazz musician would be so obvious. There must be irony, a deeper, sometimes darker or sometimes obliquely brighter perspective. This is the feeling you get from pianist and composer Pete Malinverni’s suite, which mixes clearly focused originals and the standards I Love Paris (with a The Mooch -like horn intro), Chicago, Lonely Town and There’s a Boat Dat’s Leavin’ Soon for New York
