When the legendary New York quartet release If The River Was Whiskey in May through Ruf Records, casual fans will discover the secret past the hardcore have never forgotten. The Spin Doctors might have given you the soundtrack to the best nights of the ’90s, but with this new album, they’ve rediscovered a strand of their musical DNA that melds perfectly with the hits you know and love. It’s been so refreshing to go back to this material, says Aaron. It’s just brought everything that’s good about the band out again.
It's not a bad way to acquire both discs, but since it doesn't offer any bonus tracks or new packaging, it's not an essential collector's item. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide.
The Spin Doctors became an overnight sensation, selling millions of albums around the world. Their second album, 1994's Turn It Upside Down, didn't sell very well when it was released, largely because the first single, "Cleopatra's Cat," was a failed experiment in funk. But the second single, "You Let Your Heart Go Too Fast," was in the vein of "Two Princes," and the album began to sell after the song was released. Between these tours, Barron pursued some side projects, including the 2009 solo album Pancho and the Kid. The Spin Doctors regrouped in 2013 for their first album in eight years, the all-blues If the River Was Whiskey. Stephen Thomas Erlewine.

I worked with him on the Spin Doctors record, If The River Was Whiskey. He’s musical, intuitive, a great listener, and a great engineer. He’s an Oscar winner, a Grammy nominee and he looks at me funny when I’m on the wrong track. I love making records. I think about this album in the middle of the night and right when I wake up in the morning. I have a light in my guts telling me I'm on to something and though every record you make offers it's riddles and it's stones in the road, that's the work I live for and the idea of having you in on all of that is a thrill.

13 :: The Indepedent :: San Francisco, CA. Twenty years ago this summer I saw the Spin Doctors play in a small club in New Haven, CT and ever since I’ve been a fan. From their . Festival days, to their poppy hits of early ’90s off their best-selling Pocket Full of Kryptonite album and lesser known albums like Turn It Upside Down and the live Homebelly Groove, the Spin Doctors toed the line between jamband and pop artist. On Wednesday night, the New York City quartet graced the stage at San Francisco’s The Independent – the venue I’ve been to more than any other. I love the name of the album, as the band’s overall sound has a watery feel to it, while whiskey is an allusion to the album’s bluesy style. These songs, while tight and classic in their form and style, strayed from the creative, playful and funky intricacies of the Spin Doctors older albums.
