Det som engang var (Norwegian for What Once Was) is the second studio album by the Norwegian black metal solo project Burzum. It was recorded in April 1992 and released in August 1993 through Burzum's own label, Cymophane. Varg Vikernes recorded the first four Burzum albums between January 1992 and March 1993 at the Grieg Hall in Bergen. However, the releases were spread out, with many months between the recording and the release of each album.
Though Burzum’s third album was recorded in the same window of time (January 1992 to April 1993) as the two that preceded it, it has a personality all its own. With pronounced bass tones and clearer vocals, Det Some Engang Var (Norwegian for what once was ) has a deeper, more strident pitch than earlier Burzum releases. Varg Vikernes continued to record all the instruments by himself to great effect, and his wraithlike vocals are as intense as ever.

Det som engang var (Norwegian for "what once was") is the second studio album by the Norwegian black metal solo project Burzum. Det som engang var' is very much the old-school Burzum we know. A bit less "mature" than later releases from the 90s (face it, 'Hvis lyset tar oss' and 'Filosofem' are the ultimate black metal albums), but the excellent execution of the combination of raw black metal and dark ambient make this album great. In the early period of Burzum existence Vickernes composed many awesome song. ome has been featured on his debut LP Burzum and MLP Aske and just few months after releasing these two Det som engang var sees the light of the fullmoon and I personally must say that from all these three releases this one is my favourite.
The "Det Som Engang Var" album was never released on DSP. Originally I intended to release the "Aske" mini-LP myself as well, in early 1993, but as you know that is when I was arrested for the first time. And I did. This is when Aarseth (Euronymous) got desperate, as he was frantically trying to get me to release Burzum on DSP. So to the point; "Det Som Engang Var" was released in August 1993 on my own label, Cymophane. It was only released on CD and was limited to around 950 copies. I was arrested only days after it's release though, but VoW sold some hundred copies before they refused to co-operate with me anymore (because I was "Nazi"), and I got the rest. I have sold most of these, and given some away to friends.
