Most highly regarded as a composer for the orchestra, the core of Sibelius's oeuvre is his set of seven symphonies, the last of which (in one movement) erodes the traditional subdivisions of sonata form. An eighth symphony likely was destroyed by the composer in the late 1930s . Other notable orchestral works include the Karelia Suite, Valse triste, and Rakastava. Within the concertante and chamber genres, the Violin Concerto and the string quartet Voces intimae (each in D minor), respectively, ensure Sibelius's reputation. Orchestra & voice.

Sibelius: Karelia Suite Op 11; The Maiden in the Tower opera. This opera in one act has only been recorded twice, and this BIS release represents the first recording of the two. After giving the opera a few listens, it's not that difficult to see why this work is not performed regularly anywhere in the world, nor has it been recorded more times. The orchestral interlude between the first two scenes brings us the real Sibelius, and the second scene is undoubtedly impressive; there are echoes of Wagner, such as we find in some of the great orchestral songs of the following decade. All the same, it lacks something we find in all his most characteristic music: quite simply, a sense of mastery.
Jungfrun i tornet (The Maiden in the Tower) JS 101, is the only completed opera by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Its Swedish libretto is by Rafael Hertzberg. It was first performed in a concert version during a fund-raising evening for the Helsinki Philharmonic Society on 7 November 1896. It received three further performances before Sibelius withdrew it, claiming he wanted to revise the score. He never did and the opera remained unheard until it was broadcast on Finnish radio in 1981.
