Barbarism Begins at Home" is a song by the English rock band the Smiths. Featured on the February 1985 album Meat Is Murder, it was given an initial limited release in Germany and Italy in April 1985 but was not released as a single in the UK until 1988. It is known for Andy Rourke's funk-inspired repetitive bassline synced with Johnny Marr's funk riff, with few alterations during the track.

With ‘Barbarism Begins At Home,’ a lot’s been made of the funky aspect of the bassline, but that track harks back to what I was doing with Andy (Rourke) before The Smiths. I guess it came out of this love of retro kind of James Brown records, and things like Rip Rig & Panic and The Pop Group. That period of anaemic, underfed white funk. It’s me and Andy being townies in Manchester, liking a bit of the American No-Wave thing. James Chance, I guess. Has any other band member spoken about the song? Bassist Andy reflected: It is the song – I would say it’s 80 to 90 percent bassline

Barbarism Begins At Home. So first let’s work through this bass line. This line is played by the great Andy Rourke and in this song he actually tunes up a whole step using the tuning F B E and A. So the original makes use of many open strings. In this video I won’t be showing you the up tuned version. I’m going to stay in regular old tuning and show you how to play it without messing around. But, I have included a transcription of the original F version below. I want to stay in regular tuning so I can expand on the chord progression and still make sense.
