I'm thinking "Clivages" must mean something different in Belgium than it does over here or the album cover would be different. This latest offering from UNIVERS ZERO still really hasn't caught on with me. Sure there are some instant classics like "Warrior", "Earth Scream", "Straight Edge" and "Les Cercles d'Horus" but overall this is down on my list of favourite UNIVERS ZERO albums.
The umpteenth Univers Zero release on Cuneiform, 2010's Clivages is bookended by two of the disc's four Daniel Denis compositions, the opening "Les Kobolds" and the closing "Les Cercles d'Horus," pieces that should gladden the hearts of aficionados who have followed UZ along their well over 30-year history. And so, thanks go to Daniel Denis, the drummer/composer for all these years whose work distinctively marks Clivages - but this album proves that Univers Zero reach their highest pinnacle as a truly collaborative outfit. 1 Les Kobolds Univers Zero 4:17. 2 Warrior Univers Zero 12:10. 3 Vacillements Univers Zero 3:37. 4 Earth Scream Univers Zero 3:12. 5 Soubresauts Univers Zero 7:59. 6 Apesanteur Univers Zero 3:42. 7 Three Days Univers Zero 5:55. 8 Straight Edge Univers Zero 13:58.
Univers zero personnel 2004 Univers Zero 2004. The music takes on a more personal expression, largely due to the new compositions contributed by TRIGAUX and DENIS. After a number of line-up changes, the overall sound is augmented by a harmonium and a harpsichord (played by Emmanuel NICAISE) and a second violin (Marcel DUFRANE). The resulting debut album „1313 is entirely self-produced. In 1978 UZ joins four other groups from different countries (HENRY COW, SAMLA MAMMAS MANNA, STORMY SIX, ETRON FOU LELOUBLANC) to set up „ROCK IN OPPOSITION. A number of concerts abroad follow, some of them in a combined line-up with ART ZOYD in France. In 1979 UZ record their second album, „HERESIE. Clivages, their last studio CD, was released in 2010 and nominated the best progressive rock CD by the forum of specialized site Progarchives.
Clivages is the ninth studio album by Belgian RIO band Univers Zero. Only four of the ten tracks were composed by Daniel Denis, who composed a majority of the material on most previous releases. The opening track, Les Kobolds, incorporates Flemish folk music for the first time in a Univers Zero piece. Michel Berckmans: bassoon, English horn, oboe, melodica. Kurt Budé: clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone. Pierre Chevalier: keyboards, glockenspiel. Daniel Denis: drums, percussion, sampler.
Univers Zero (also known as Univers Zéro and Univers-Zero) are an instrumental progressive Belgian band formed in 1974 by drummer Daniel Denis. The band is known for playing dark music heavily influenced by 20th-century chamber music. In 1973, Claude Deron and Daniel Denis, both former members of Belgian "Zeuhl" band Arkham (which had disbanded the previous year), set up a new group, Necronomicon.
And yet Clivages is so much more than a mere revisitation of past UZ glories and nightmares. For example, despite all the explosive energy of the '80s-era band (check out the Relaps live collection for evidence), one crucially lacking element back then was the signature sound of Michel Berckmans' bassoon, and he is all over Clivages, including a face-off with Kurt Budé's bass clarinet on "Warrior"'s buildup.
