Winterreise (Winter Journey) is a song cycle for voice and piano by Franz Schubert (D. 911, published as Op. 89 in 1828), a setting of 24 poems by Wilhelm Müller. It is the second of Schubert's two great song cycles on Müller's poems, the earlier being Die schöne Müllerin (D. 795, Op. 25, 1823). Both were originally written for tenor voice but are frequently transposed to suit other vocal ranges – the precedent being established by Schubert himself

Die Winterreise Tracklist. 1. Gute Nacht Lyrics. Schubert’s musical setting distinctly overrides Müller’s literary achievement, turning a minor collection of poems into a bleak and somber song cycle expressing the hopelessness of the wandering protagonist’s journey as he ruminates on a lost love. The cycle is set for piano and a tenor voice, though many baritones have had great success performing it. Die Winterreise Q&A. Writers Franz Schubert & Wilhelm Müller. More Franz Schubert albums. Can a woman interpret those emotions?" is an absurd question. Lotte Lehmann did so, and did so superbly more than 50 years ago. But, to answer the question "is Brigitte Fassbaender nuts?" the answer is "yeah, d'you've a problem with that?" After all, aside from the singer's gender and other pointless concerns, what's the most important psychological characteristic a human being needs to sing Winterreise? He/she has to be crazy or at least act the part. Fassbaender may not be crazy, but she can act.
Lotte Lehmann was the first woman to perform and record the complete Winterreise of Schubert. The recording was split between RCA and Columbia during 1940 and 1941, but Naxos has combined the two with acceptable results (but not complete, so Pearl is also needed). The pianist for the whole project was Paul Ulanowsky. But wait, as the commercials say, there’s more! Lehmann was an artist and painted individual watercolors for each song

Wonderful to hear this cycle sung by a woman. Lehman set a high bar but this recording is not her best. Is it late in her career or just the recording? Jungfer Marianne Leizmetzerin3y ago. Lehmann was born in 1888 and her career began around 1910. Although she would continue to give recitals and a rare staged opera performance at the Met or San Francisco for another decade post-1941, she was 53 when she made this recording and winding down her career.
