Every Good Boy Deserves Favour is a stage play by Tom Stoppard with music by André Previn. It was first performed in 1977. The play criticises the Soviet practice of treating political dissidence as a form of mental illness. Its title derives from the popular mnemonic used by music students to remember the notes on the lines of the treble clef. The cast comprises six actors, but also a full orchestra, which not only provides music throughout the play but also forms an essential part of the action.

Orchestrated madness is back on stage at the National, where a newly recast version of Tom Stoppard and André Previn's 1977 play for actors and orchestra returns to the repertoire. Adrian Schiller is the Russian political prisoner Alexander who has been confined to a state mental hospital, and Julian Bleach, relishing madness, is his cellmate Ivanov, a genuine lunatic who hears music in his head and insists he has a full orchestra under his charge. The pleasure is all in the staging by Felix Barrett and Tom Morris and in the way that the on-stage Southbank Sinfonia orchestra, which plays Previn's score so expressively, is used as a metaphor for the all-powerful and labyrinthine USSR itself. The best moment comes in a sequence – choreographed with customary brilliance by Maxine Doyle – when state-sponsored thugs emerge from the orchestra to mug the violinists.
EVERY Good Boy Deserves Favour, a play for actors and orchestra, a collaboration between Tom Stoppard, the playwright, and Andre Previn, the composer and conductor, is itself a tIwntrical nun - a ‘play on words and music. This ingenious keyboard come. dy, which began an eightperformance run last night at the Metropolitan Opera House, is about the political dissident as the discordant note in the orchestra that we call society
