Kid Koala is probably best known to those who aren’t DJ aficionados as the man who was behind the decks on Deltron 3030. Others may have been lucky enough to hear his stunning 2000 debut, Carpel Tunnel Syndrome. Those who have heard the album, know a few things about Montreal’s Eric San: he is an incredible DJ, he is incredibly funny, and his albums come with some of the best artwork you’ll ever get with a CD. Eric San (born December 5, 1974), aka Kid Koala, is a world-renowned scratch DJ, music producer, film composer, video game composer, and award winning graphic novelist. He has released six solo album (on Arts & Crafts and Ninja Tune), the most recent being Music To Draw To: IO featuring Trixie Whitley. Taken from the excellent album Supermodified, ‘Four Ton Mantis’ is an ominous chunk of moody, jazz-tinged hip hop with a beat heavier than a pregnant elephant. 05: mr scruff ‘Get a move on’, ‘Ug’ (ninja tune, 1999). The closest thing that Ninja Tune has to a signature tune, ‘Get A Move On’ quickly reached saturation point after it featuring in a number of adverts and TV shows. Despite its overfamiliarity, its status as an ebullient pop anthem is hard to deny. In 2003 he emerged as a master of turntablism with the album Some Of My Best Friends Are DJs. My favourite track on there is ‘Skanky Panky’, which finds the dextrous Canadian cutting and scratching an array of ancient samples into the shape of his very own ska tune. 07: wagon christ receiver ep (ninja tune, 2001).
All of which leaves the challenger, Kid Koala, in a strong position to mop up Shadow's fanbase. As the cheery Canadian established with his excellent 2003 breakthrough, Some of My Best Friends Are DJs, his shtick is jazzy breaks, inventive scratching and witty, sampled lines from old films and TV shows. His twist here is that this 33-minute album is broken into just two long tracks, telling the loose tale of a DJ's life. The first time you listen, it's entertaining, amusing stuff.
